The goal of the Sauna Belt product is to help the user lose weight by raising the temperature of the midsection (where the belt is worn).  The temperature will rise, up to 104 degrees F, but the only weight lost will be in the form of water from sweating it off.  You will not lose fat and the water weight that is lost is only temporary.  I would NOT recommend the Sauna Belt for weight loss.

Are high protein diets safe?

High protein diets are safe for the majority of healthy people and they can help with weight loss.  You would need to be careful of a high protein diet if:

  • You also have to restrict carbohydrates while on a high protein diet.  This type of diet can result in nutritional deficiencies.
  • You eat high protein foods that are also high in fat such as red meats.  This can increase the risks of heart disease.
  • You have kidney or liver problems prior.  A high protein diet would not be recommended since your body may have trouble eliminating the waste products that result from metabolizing protein.

Can you lose weight with colonic irrigation?

Colonic irrigation, also known as colon cleansing is the method of injecting water into the colon using special equipment.  The purpose is to “cleanse” the bowels of any putrefied feces and impurities.  It is also claimed that you can lose weight with colonic irrigation but most of the weight loss will be in the form of water and any feces removed from the bowels by the process itself and it will NOT be fat.

When it comes to losing weight, both are probably NOT all that effective.

Chromium picolinate is a nutritional supplement sold under the premise of supporting a healthy metabolism and as an aid in reducing insulin resistance.  Truthfully, this might marginally be the case for diabetics but no solid research has shown this to be the case for non-diabetics.  On the positive side, though, studies have shown that even relatively high doses are safe.

L-carnitine is nutrient that aids the body in turning fat into energy.  Sounds good, right?  Well, the body can typically make all the L-carnitine that it needs, so supplementing with it makes little sense unless you are deficient which is rare.

There are really no magic pills that will zap the fat away.  As a supplement to a good diet and exercise, there are some diet pills that can aid a person’s fat loss journey.  When looking for a pill to help lose weight, you should consider these factors:

  • Product safety
  • Ingredients
  • Speed of results
  • Long-term results
  • Effectiveness
  • Cost

I’m going to assume that you are morbidly obese and you’ve exercised (no pun intended) all options for weight loss from supplements, diet and exercise with little to know success.  Probably on of the most popular and well known weight loss surgeries is a gastric bypass.  Gastric bypass is actually the most performed weight loss surgery in the United States according to the Mayo Clinic.

It basically is an operation to make the stomach smaller.  This allows you to feel full much more quickly and some of the food will bypass the small intestine which means fewer calories get absorbed.  You eat less, less calories are consumed and then you drop weight.  According to WebMD, patients that go through gastric bypass can expect to lose 69% to 82% of the excess weight in 12 to 54 months.

What do you eat after weight loss surgery?

After a weight loss surgery such as gastric bypass, food choices are more limited.  I recommend eating foods that can be mashed up or puréed for post-surgery meals.  This is because these foods are much easier to digest and for the body to absorb.  Other foods to consider after than are:

It will be highly dependent on your employer’s insurance plan as to whether you would be covered for a weight loss surgery and to what extent.  So check with your employer or insurance provider to find out for sure.

Why are many of the people I have seen who have had lap band or gastric bypass still overweight years later?

The goal of gastric bypass is to reduce the calories consumed and reduce the amount of food (calories) that get absorbed.  Despite a bypassed stomach, people who eat high calorie foods and eat between meals can still begin to put on weight.  Also, eating enough food and often enough will begin to stretch the lining of the stomach (creating more space for food), basically reversing the effects of the surgery.  A few years of this and you can become overweight again.

Women, listen up, the best way to lose weight fast isn’t with a magic pill or with some fad diet.  It is with good old exercise and a solid nutrition plan.  For exercise, I really do recommend lifting weights.  Concerned that you’ll put on bulky muscle?  Don’t be, because you simply won’t.  Since you don’t create enough testosterone in your body, you can’t.  Instead, you’ll build lean, sexy muscle, burn lots of calories and shed fat.  I urge you to do some research on the Internet or hire a personal trainer to learn all about lifting weights and getting into a beginner’s program.

When it comes to solid nutrition, I offer these main tips:

  • Eat more often (5 to 6 small/moderate meals each day)
  • Drop sugared drinks, grab water instead
  • Eat more protein (lean chicken, fish, eggs, low-fat diary, lean red meats)

Actually, breastfeeding will help you lose weight faster versus a not breastfeeding.  According to “Livestrong.com”, a breastfeeding alone burns about 500 calories per day.  Add that to a healthy diet (see answers above) and some regular exercise.  I don’t recommend exercise that is too high intensity, especially right after a pregnancy.  Some good activities are walking or using an elliptical trainer or light jogging and light weight-lifting.

Men, if you want to lose weight fast, you really need to pick up the iron.  Lifting weights has so many great benefits including:

  • Swimming

Any exercise where you get the heart pumping and the calories burning is a good exercise.  It is also low impact which is easy on your joints.  Personally though, speed walking wouldn’t hold my interest for very long.  There are too many other fitness activities that would be much more fun.

Prior to any new fitness routine, you should consult a doctor to make sure you are physically fit enough.  Assuming that is the case, running is a super way to lose weight.  I recommend that you start gradually.  For most of us that haven’t run in quite a while, we just don’t have the endurance.  So start at a slow and steady pace.  Maybe start off by running 10 minutes or a half mile without stopping.  Do this for one week.  Then, the next week, increase the time or the distance a little (maybe 15 minutes or one mile).  As you gradually increase the distance or time you run, you’ll improve your endurance.  The longer you can run, the more calories you’ll burn and the more effective your weight loss can be.

  • Eating foods that contain good fats – these are foods that have monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats (and heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids).  Some foods with good fats include nuts, oils, cold-water fish, dark leafy greens, some vegetable oils, and flaxseed oils to name a few.

You want healthy eating to be a way of life and not a diet.  To melt the fat off and keep it off, you want to be able to sustain your eating habits.  I’ve been doing this type of nutrition lifestyle for almost 10 years and I love it.  In fact, you’ll find that eating right goes a lot further than exercise towards achieving a body that is lean.

3.  Chili.  This is a tasty low-fat favorite of mine.  It also packs in a good amount of fiber and lean protein.  Take a good chili mix (Bear Creek makes a good one).  Add the mix to some low-fat chicken broth.  Mix in cooked lean ground turkey, kidney bean, black beans, tomato paste.  You can also add in some chopped garlic, onions and bell peppers.  Simmer for about 20 minutes and enjoy a serving a fat-blasting chili that will knock the socks off your taste buds.

When I look to drop weight quickly, I first clean my diet of junk foods and then add in these healthy staples to my diet:

If you are sedentary (inactive), your body burns about 2000 calories each day.  So the first home remedy for quick weight loss is reducing your calories.  You have to burn 3,500 calories to lose one pound of fat.  If you reduce your calories to 1,800/day and burn 2000, then you’ll lose a pound of fat in under 18 days.  Add in a little activity that burns 200 extra calories and you’ll lose that pound of fat just over a week!  Another home remedy that will quicken weight loss is substituting water for sugary drinks such as soda and juice.  By doing this alone, you can lose a few pounds pretty quickly.  A third home remedy for quick weight loss is doing household chores.  By doing household chores, you expend calories, so you are getting your house clean and burning calories and fat at the same time!

Age and genetics may play somewhat of a role in how much loose or stretched skin you’ll have when losing weight.  You can try to minimize/prevent stretched skin by having your weight loss be slow and steady versus really fast.  If you keep the weight loss fairly slow, one to two pounds a week, your skin can adapt and acclimate to the reduction and shrink down along with the reduction in fat and weight.  You should also keep your water intake high, up to a gallon or more a day.

When it comes to losing weight and keeping it off, both can actually make or break your success.  The key is to reduce calories smartly and keep your carbohydrates at a reasonable level.

The key to weight loss really is calories in versus calories out.  That is what you eat versus what you burn off.  If you burn off 2500 calories each day, then a good rule of thumb is to eat about 100 or 200 calories less each day.  Accumulate a 3500 calorie deficit and you’ll lose one pound.  If you drop your calories too much, you’ll lack energy, may not get all the nutrients your body needs and you’ll be much more likely to binge on poor food choices.

When it comes to carbohydrates, they are your main energy source.  Again, if you drop them too low, you’ll feel lethargic and it will be tough to stay on a low carb diet for too long.  The key to carbohydrates is keep sugary or quick-digesting carbohydrates in moderation and make the rest slow digesting  and fibrous carbohydrates such as oatmeal, fruits and vegetables.  A good rule of thumb is to consume about 100 to 150 grams of carbohydrates each day.

Should I cut carbohydrates to a minimum for fast weight loss?

If you plan to do this for a short term(a week or two at the most), then it is probably okay.  It is very difficult, if not impossible to maintain for much longer than that.  You’ll be much more likely to binge and eat poorly once off low/no carbs and keeping them too low for too long can slow your metabolism.  This will make it easier for your body to store fat once off the diet.  Instead, maybe carbohydrate cycle.  On days where you are the most active (such as workout days) eat more carbohydrates.  On days where you are more sedentary, reduce them by 30% to 50%.  You’ll find that this is easier to maintain and the fat loss stays pretty consistent, especially with regular exercise.

How many carbs per day for weight loss?

When trying to lose weight, a good rule of thumb is to keep carbohydrate to about 30% of your daily calorie intake.  So if you eat 1800 calories a day for weight loss, then your carb intake would be:

0.30 x 1800 = 540 calories

Now you need to convert the daily carbohydrate calories to daily carbohydrate grams.  Each gram of carbohydrate is worth 4 calories, so to get your daily carbohydrate intake in grams, do:

540 (calories)/4 (calories/gram) = 135 grams of carbohydrates per day

As a good rule of thumb, I typically keep carbohydrate totals in the range of 100 grams to 150 grams per day when trying to lose weight, so the 135 grams per day is well within that range.

If you want to lose weight, then you want to eat carbohydrates that don’t cause a huge spike in your blood sugar.  When this occurs, insulin gets released which brings your blood sugar back down but it also primes your body for fat storage.  The carbs that keep your blood sugar more stable will be complex in nature (starchy and not high sugar).  My favorites for fat loss include:

– Sweet potatoes

– Beans, peas and lentils (also called legumes)

– Vegetables (especially green leafy ones like broccoli and spinach)

– Oatmeal, oat bran and other whole grains

– Fruits like apples, grapefruit and blueberries

What carbs to avoid to lose weight fast?

The following carbohydrates can completely wreck a person’s success and keep them from reaching their weight loss goals:

  • High sugar carbs like ice cream, cake, candy, etc
  • Refined pastas
  • Processed foods (often high in sugar and calories)
  • Fried foods (like french fries)
  • Fast foods (again, high in sugar, calories and fat)

Also, even through fruit is natural, it can still have a good amount of sugar, so I recommend eating it in moderation by keeping intake to one to two pieces per day.

Do carb blockers work to speed up weight loss?

I wouldn’t really say they speed up weight loss but they can help prevent weight gain.  The idea behind them is to block excess carbohydrates from being broken down and converted into glucose which will either fuel your body’s energy needs or stored as fat (if they are excess carbs).  Carb blockers are said to block up to 40 grams or so of carbohydrates at each meal.  Not a super huge amount but useful if you have a high carbohydrate meal such as ice cream or a pasta dish.  I would recommend a carb blocker for anyone who really loves their carbohydrates and has to eat something high carb every day.  Of course nothing substitutes a good clean diet and exercise so look at carb blockers as an aid to prevent weight gain.  If you already have things in check and eat mostly good carb sources (oatmeal, sweet potatoes, veggies), then a carb blocker probably isn’t necessary.

Vegetarian diets exclude foods that are animal based in their diets.  This typically includes eggs, meat, dairy and honey.  Unfortunately, many vegetarian-friendly foods can be very high in calories.  Peanut butter, french fries, avocados, processed foods that are animal free and sugar are some examples.  So, to lose weight as a vegetarian, I offer these tips:

  • Stay away from calorie dense foods or processed foods
  • Use substitutes.  Instead of refined pastas, create low-calories noodles with a zucchini and a spiral slicer.
  • Cook meals that have protein, slow digesting carbohydrate, good dietary fats and fiber.
  • Try Shirataki noodles which are an Asian noodle made from tofu
  • Use exercise to burn extra calories.
  • Eat Quinoa.  It is a complete protein, good carb source, low calorie and it tastes great.
  • Take a good multi-vitamin.  Not getting enough vitamins and minerals can hamper weight loss.

How long do i have to be vegan to experience weight loss?

It will depend on what your diet was like before becoming a vegan.  If you were eating a lot of processed foods, sugar and fried foods before hand, then you can lose weight pretty quickly.  Ideally, just as with any other healthy diet, you can expect to lose 1 pound to 2 pounds per week, safely and healthily.  Initially you might lose more but that the initial fast weight loss may be water weight.  If you are obese, you can lose more weight initially as well (3 to 5 pounds per week) versus someone who has much less weight to lose.

How to go raw for weight loss?

A raw food diet is typically known as a diet where you eat foods that are not heated above 118 ‘F or 42 ‘C.  You would eat mostly raw veggies and fruits as well as seeds and nuts.  There are several recipes on this site as well as your local bookshop and online for creating recipes for food favorites like cake that will be much lower in calories and higher in nutrition than the real thing.

On a raw food diet, you’ll also stop eating processed foods since they are typically heated/cooked.  This means you’ll consume a lot less sugar and less calories, making weight loss easier and hence faster.  I think the toughest thing about going raw is coming up with recipes.  Some good ideas are sprouted breads or raw soups like gazpacho or even fish recipes like sushi.  Again, the Internet will be a great source for raw diet recipes.

Is raw vegan weight loss due to consuming fewer calories?

Eating a raw vegan diet can be a big contributing factor to quick weight loss due to eating fewer calories.  This can be especially true if your diet was much different before hand.  Of course, a raw vegan diet doesn’t have to be low calorie.  If you compensate by eating higher calories foods such as olive oils and raw nuts and seeds which can be high in fat.  A raw vegan diet also will have you eating raw plant foods which can also greatly accelerate weight loss due to how they are metabolized by the body (also due to their high fiber content).

In my opinion, the best fat burning foods are lean proteins.  This is because they  are have a fairly high thermogenic effect (requires body to use more energy to digest them) but lean proteins are also fairly low in calories and great for building muscles.  My favorite protein sources are egg whites, chicken, turkey breast, fish and other seafood and of course lean red meats.

What are the best fat burning exercises?

Without a doubt, the best fat burning exercise for both men and women is weight lifting.  Besides burning fat, you’ll also build strength, agility, power and speed to boot.

What are the best fat burning supplements?

The best fat burning supplements in my opinion will have these characteristics:

1.      Easy on the wallet

2.      Will actually work towards fat reduction

3.      They have research or proof based on personal experience

The supplements I tend to use that fit the above constraints are:

  • fish oil pills
  • whey protein
  • caffeine

The fish oil pills are an inexpensive supplement found in grocery stores and pharmacies that really works wonders for fat reduction.  It has heart healthy Omega-3 fatty acids and it has biologically active ingredients that help activate fat release as well as help you maintain proper hormone levels for fat burning.

The whey protein doesn’t burn fat per say but if used effectively it can be used as a super way to create tasty meals that are much lower in calories.  Say you have a big sweet tooth like I do.  Rather than grabbing those low nutrition, high calorie cookies, mix some chocolate whey protein with sugar-free, fat-free chocolate pudding and you have a high-protein, low calorie dessert.

The caffeine gives you a temporary bump in your metabolism and it is also a temporary appetite suppressant.  Both go a long way towards aiding fat loss.

Truthfully, there is NO way to lose weight in a specific area.  Fat loss occurs in layers, like peeling the skin off an onion.  The only way to lose weight in your thighs is through consistency … a consistent nutritious diet and consistent exercise.

A good meal plan for losing weight fast is any plan that has:

A mix of whole foods (vegetables, fruits, lean meats, low-fat dairy, whole grains, nuts, seeds)

The best way to calculate your calorie intake is through trial and error.  You might start out with an online calorie calculator like this one click here:

The value it gives you is the amount of calories you need to maintain your weight.  So to lose weight, you might drop 200 calories or so and then go for a week on the reduced calorie intake.  If you are losing weight, then you are good to go.  If you aren’t, then you might drop another 200 calories and take another week or two.  If you are dropping weight, you are good.  If not, you can reduce calories again until you find a range where you start to lose weight.

What is a good calorie intake to lose weight quickly?

As a good rule of thumb, take you weight (in pounds) and multiply it by 13.  For instance, if you weight 185lbs:

185lbs x 13 = 2405 calories.  At this calorie intake, I should be able to lose weight.  If the weight doesn’t start coming off after a week or two, you can start reducing the multiplier, 185×12, 185×11, etc until weight loss is consistent.  So, go a week at bodyweight x 13.  Evaluate and if the scale isn’t moving, do bodyweight x 12.  Go a week and then evaluate and so on.

When I want to track my calories (count them), I find it is easiest with an online tracker.  You can use this one.  It has a huge database of foods and their nutritional content, including calories for various serving sizes.  For any foods that don’t exist, you can customize and add them.  The site is free as well.  As you track each day, you can find how much you are eating consistently.  The site also has a way of tracking how much you burn daily based on what activities you do.  So you’ll be able to see if you are taking in more calories than you burn (will gain weight) or if you are burning more calories that you consume (will lose weight)

You can’t spot reduce fat, it comes off in layers.  So to lose the fat throughout your body, you need to put together a healthy eating lifestyle and exercise program where you get at least 30 to 40 minutes of exercise daily.

While you can’t spot fat, you can definitely tight the muscles.  For love handles, you should work your core (abdominals, obliques, and lower back).  These are my favorite exercises for hitting the core and love handles:

Eat meals every 3 to 4 hours and make sure each has a serving of protein, good carbohydrates and good dietary fats.  If you start losing fat/weight based on the above rules, you are doing fine.  If you don’t, you’ll want to adjust a little.   Start by adjusting the fat or protein down a little.  Maybe go from 1.2 grams of protein per pound of bodyweight to 1.1 or take the fats from 0.8 grams per pound of bodyweight to 0.7.  Track and watch the scale.  You may need to adjust.  Other good characteristics of a good weight loss nutrition plan will be:

Adequate amounts of fiber (at least 30 grams daily)

Lower in sugar (everything in moderation)

Nothing processed, fried or refined

Will use lots of whole and natural foods

Beverage of choice is water

Always go for whole and natural foods.  These are foods as nature intended them and they’ll be packed with nutrition and lower in calories (versus the majority of processed, refined, fast and fried foods).  Think vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds, whole grains and organic/grass-fed lean meats.

If you want to kick off a smart way of eating and lose weight rapidly, you need to shoot for foods that are high in nutrition but lower in calories.  You definitely want to stop eating:

NOTE:  In general, with any food, moderation is the key to rapid and healthy weight loss.  So even with healthy foods, practice portion control.  Fruit is healthy but if you eat tons of it, the calories will definitely add up and weight loss will be compromised.

Yes, you can lose weight fast with smoking and there are several reasons for this.  First, smoking wrecks your taste buds.  If your taste buds get damaged, food doesn’t taste as good, so you eat less.  Smoking also has nicotine which acts as an appetite suppressant.  Finally, smoking will bump your metabolic rate up a bit by making your heart beat faster.  When your heart beats faster, your body is expending more energy which burns more calories.  Unfortunately, I don’t think this is a safe form of weight loss and the risks and dangers far out-weigh the weight-loss benefits.

How to crash diet?

The goal of crash dieting is to lose weight as quickly as possible.  Crash diets are NOT the best way to make long term weight loss goals but they can prove useful when you need to lose a few pounds quickly for a special event.  Some keys to effective crash dieting are:

  • Don’t consume empty calories
  • Drink lots of water
  • Exercise daily, sometimes twice each day

You should also eat less since the goal is to lose weight quickly.  The best option is to eat foods with as much nutrition as possible but as few calories as possible.  Eat lots of vegetables, especially the green leafy kinds.  Spinach and broccoli are two good crash diet veggies.  Also beans and whole grains are good.  They are all good sources of fiber, which will aid in digestion and keeping you full longer.  These foods also have some protein which will help keep you full and help maintain lean muscle.

As a final note on crash diets, only stay on one for a few days.  If you try to crash diet for too long, you’ll damage your hormone level and metabolism.  This would make it easier to put on weight and fat once you are off the diet.  You can also damage your health.

Celebrities are just like anyone else when it comes to quick weight loss.  It is all about calories in (what you eat) versus calories out (what you burn off).  Of course celebs have more money which can make it a more streamlined process such as hiring chefs to cook healthy meals, a personal trainer and building a home gym with fancy equipment.  Celebrities, just like everyone else, though, have to put in the hard work to lose weight and burn fat.

Can detox diets help you lose weight fast?

With a detox diet, you typically fast and then drink lots of water and consume natural foods.  The main goal is detoxification or removal of toxins/waste from the body.  While you can lose weight, it will be mostly in the form of water.  Also, a detox diet is very short term and it isn’t a diet that can be sustained.  This is mainly because you can’t get enough nutrition and the fact that you’ll get hungry because the calorie intake may be very low.  Also, if you tried to do this diet, long term, it would be lower your metabolism which would slow weight loss (may even mean weight gain) once the diet stopped.

Can you lose weight by throwing up?

In all honesty, you won’t really lose weight by throwing up.  Sure you could lose a little based on the weight of the food you throw up and any water weight along with that.  In the long term though, you’ll really damage your health.  You’ll also slow your metabolism down  If your metabolism slows, so does your ability to efficiently burn calories.  This means it gets even harder to lose weight.  This is definitely NOT an option to mess with for losing weight. Also not recommended is becoming anorexic. I warn people who ask me for anorexia tips about the dangers to their health and life they will be risking.

You can lose weight with laxatives but probably not the type of weight you want to lose.  Most of us who want to lose weight actually want to reduce body fat.  Laxatives will only help you lose water weight.  Side effects of laxatives include unpredictable frequency of bathroom use short term laxative use.  Long term laxative use can be dangerous in that it can cause irregular menstrual cycles in women, gastrointestinal tract damage, stomach pain, osteomacia (softening of the bones) and stomach pain.  Clearly, this is not a recommended method for weight loss.
